We are excited to announce that the EVO Visian ICL Lens, which earned FDA approval in the United States in 2022, is now available for our patients.
What is the EVO Visian ICL Lens?
EVO Visian ICL is an Implantable Collamer Lens that is designed to give you crisp, clear vision. The EVO Visian ICL Lens is made of Collamer, a biocompatible material that is flexible and works in harmony with your eye. The lens is implanted in a 20-to-30-minute procedure and patients typically enjoy a quick recovery time.
Like LASIK or PRK, EVO Visian ICL implantation is a refractive surgery that can correct nearsightedness (myopia) with or without astigmatism. What sets ICL apart is that it can correct a high range of myopia without removing any corneal tissue.
Why would my doctor recommend an EVO Visian ICL Lens?
EVO Visian ICL can correct a wide range of vision, including patients with prescriptions up to -20 diopters and astigmatism up to 4.0 D. Many patients who have prescriptions higher than -8 diopters of near sightedness or who have been told that they have “thin corneas” are not candidates for laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK). As such, these patients may qualify for ICLs and be able to achieve full visual correction without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.
Although the goal of ICL is to provide permanent vision correction, they are removable by your doctor, if needed. One other bonus is that they have natural UV protection.
Who are ideal candidates for ICL implantation?
Ideal candidates are:
• Between the ages of 21 and 45
• Seeking treatment for nearsightedness (with or without astigmatism)
• Stable in their current prescription for at least one year
• Not currently pregnant or nursing

Patients with higher levels of near sightedness typically have intolerance to heavy weighted, thick glasses lenses, which often result in optical distortion while looking through the edge of the lenses. For these same patients, contact lens intolerance or abuse -- which can lead to contact lens associated corneal infections --can leave a patient frustrated with limited vision correction options. ICL implantation offers highly nearsighted individuals the chance to obtain clear vision without having to battle the drawbacks of more traditional visual corrective aids. --Dr. Joshua Zaffos
