The Basics of LASIK
What It Means
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. It's a type of eye surgery designed to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. We specifically offer Intralasik iDesign.
What It Does
If you have refractive errors like hyperopia or myopia, LASIK eye surgery can correct them. How? Our ophthalmologists safely reshape your cornea using laser technology. Because we perform Intralasik iDesign, we can fully personalize your treatment for far more accurate vision correction.
Who Performs It
Only ophthalmologists can perform LASIK surgery. Luckily, our three offices are home to highly trained ophthalmologists known for more than 150 publications on topics like refractive surgery.
How Does LASIK Treat Common Vision Problems?
LASIK surgery treats refractive errors at their source, reshaping the curvature of your eye. When we perform LASIK in Plano, we correct common vision problems like hyperopia (farsightedness) and myopia (nearsightedness) by removing very small amounts of corneal tissue.
Some patients also have abnormally shaped corneas, which causes astigmatism. Common astigmatism symptoms range from worsened night vision to blurry eyesight. This condition can be present in addition to hyperopia and myopia. And like those refractive errors, it can also be corrected with LASIK.

Am I a Good Candidate
for Laser Eye Surgery?
We commonly assess potential Plano LASIK patients at our advanced office. During your consultation, we will determine if laser eye surgery is right for you. Our ophthalmologists look at factors like:
- Cornea Tissue: The thickness of your cornea tissue plays a role in your eligibility. Some patients have less cornea tissue than others, which can disqualify them from being a good LASIK eye surgery candidate. However, they may still be eligible for PRK.
- Medical Conditions: Do you have eye or other medical conditions? Patients with problems like dry eye, autoimmune disorders, and glaucoma may not be eligible for the LASIK procedure.
- Pregnancy: Did you know that pregnancy can affect your eyesight? It's true, which is why we advise pregnant patients to wait for LASIK until their eyesight has stabilized again.
- Vision Changes: You'll have to wait until your vision has stopped changing to pursue LASIK. Patients under the age of 18 are especially prone to changes, which is why you must be an adult to consider LASIK.
There's only one way to know for sure if LASIK can help with your case: contacting our Plano, TX, ophthalmologist's office for a free laser eye surgery consultation.
